GTA 6 Radio Overhaul Adds On-Foot Headphone Listening and Persistent Station Memory

Grand Theft Auto 6 updates the series' radio system, enabling on-foot headphone playback for Jason and Lucia and remembering chosen stations across vehicles.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is introducing a long-requested revamp to the franchise’s radio system, allowing players to listen to broadcast music and podcasts outside of vehicles. Across earlier entries in the series, car radios routinely cut off the moment a protagonist stepped out of the door. In the upcoming release, both Jason and Lucia can continue tuning in while traveling on foot by plugging headphones into their in-game smartphones.

According to feature details, the on-foot audio capability spans every station broadcasting across the state of Leonida, alongside in-universe podcasts. Rockstar has designed the system to persist during active gameplay, meaning playback can continue uninterrupted throughout gunfights and chases, provided the protagonists keep their headphones in place.

The sequel also tackles a long-standing vehicle annoyance from Grand Theft Auto 5. In previous games, entering a newly stolen car or re-entering an owned ride frequently reset the radio to a random broadcast. GTA 6 incorporates station memory, meaning vehicles and stationary radios placed throughout the world retain the last tuned station when boarded.

Several radio stations and guest hosts across Leonida have already been revealed by Rockstar:

  • Flash FM: The returning Vice City pop station, hosted by Robyn and Alex Consani.
  • Cocoteo FM: Modern Latin music programming hosted by Bad Bunny and RaiNao.
  • Dirty South Classics: Regional hip-hop and rap curated by Miami icons Trick Daddy and Trina.
  • Back Country Radio: A mix of classic and modern country hosted by Morgan Wallen and Lana Del Rey, featuring reports from Jeremy Dufrene.
  • The Chamber 106.6: A heavy metal station covering 1980s classics up to modern tracks, hosted by Kerry King and Tom Araya.
  • AfroBank FM: Contemporary African music hosted by Burna Boy and Palms Trax.

While rumors continue to circulate regarding potential third-party playlist imports via Spotify, that functionality remains unconfirmed ahead of launch. More stations and genre lineups are expected to be unveiled as GTA 6 approaches its console rollout.
